Actually, I think if Naruto were to die the kyuubi would die with him. When Naruto nearly died protecting Tsunade from Kabuto the kyuubi felt his powers slipping away and everything becoming dark until Tsunade saved Naruto and suddenly he was back.
Also, prior to this when Jiraiya flung Naruto off that cliff and Naruto "met" the kyuubi, the fox said something along the lines of;
"So you're saying that if you die, I'll die too? You have guts to blackmail me..."
Since then the kyuubi gives Naruto his chakra when Naruto is in danger. You didn't seriously think that the kyuubi was doing it out of the goodness of his heart, did you? :P
It seems that the only way the kyuubi would be released is if somehow the Fourth's seal is broken. Because the seal was created with the Fourth's soul through summoning the God of Death I doubt it can be broken by simply killing Naruto.
I really wonder what the Akatsuki intend to do with Naruto? Harnessing the kyuubi somehow would either mean (1) making Naruto join them. Which is unlikely. (2) Release the kyuubi, which is even more unlikely in my opinion because the beast answers to no one and lives to destroy. Not calculate and strategise. (3) Transfer the kyuubi to someone else. Maybe even Itachi. Scary thought... and a tad far-fetched... but how else are they gonna get the kyuubi to work for them?
