NIN's "With Teeth" listen before buying and NIN goodies

I thought I'd give a warning before you read any farther. Geekyness and fangirling ahead. I'm sure you peeps are already getting tired of me talking about it *laughs* but this is probably only the beginning. MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Good thing I was searching around for communities last night and came across a link that has the whole album up to listen to. It plays all the songs but the player doesn't tell you the title of the song (though they are playing it in order). More than likely you'll have to find a place that either has the lyrics or title tracks wherever. Was told there are no lyrics in the cd booklet so you'll have to look for the lyrics anyways.

I like how they did this on getting to hear it before making ones mind up on buying it. I think alot of these bands should do it. Would give the fans a taste as to what the band itself is putting out, especially for as long as NIN has been silent.

Once you click the play button, give a little time for the buffer to pick up.

Thoughts overall::

I had to listen to it twice only cause the 1st time I wasn't really paying attention (cause of work and all). The 2nd go round I was able to take in alot of things, sounds, lyrics, how it all comes together on how certain songs are done, etc. I hate to use this word but till I come up with something better, I'm using it. This is a bit "softer" than their previous stuff and thank god not as mellow as The Fragile. It still has its heavy sounds but not the edginess we were use to from the mid '90's. I think Trent got alot of that out of his system back in the days.

I think "With Teeth" is a pretty good album, granted I'm sure ppl out there who are very picky will be like "well, having to wait 6 yrs and this is what we get?" I don't know what ppl expect out of this band, I think Trent has covered alot of boundaries with his creativity and to me, this album is still NIN.

I'm not going to go through all the songs, just ones that kinda stood out to me. I see a pattern though of how alot of the choruses is what I picked out of the songs that sealed me to it::

All The Love In The World - I like how it repeats Why do you get all the love in the world near the end of the song. I don't know if its how the beat changes along with the thumping of the bass drum that set it for me or what.

You Know What You Are? - the chorus has that heavy sound almost classic NIN style and a tad of the early M.Manson sound too (more long the lines of American Portrait though of course it would sound like that to me since Trent produced that album). Don't you fucking know what you are? [x3]
Com'on get back to where you belong!

With Teeth - the beat of the drums and the way he drags out the word "teeth".

Only - the "talking" style of singing and like the beat to the song. Will post the lyrics below.

Right Where It Belongs - the background music is what makes this song along with the different mixes thrown in. Like the added touch of throwing a "live" crowd noise in the back.

And of course still love The Hand that Feeds.

Lyrics for

Only

I'm becoming less to find as days go by
Fading away
Well you might say
I'm losing focus
Kind adrifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself

Sometimes I think I can see right through myself [x3]

Less concerned about fitting into the world
Your world that is
Because it doesn't really matter
(no it doesn't really matter anymore)
None of this really matters anymore

Yes I'm alone but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell
I think maybe it's because you never were really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself [x6] <---(the line above and this one is genius)
And it worked.
Yes it did!

[Chorus]
There is no you
There is only me
There is no you
There is only me
There is no fucking you
There is only me
There is no fucking you
There is only me

Only [x3]

The tiniest little dot caught my eye and it turned out to be scab and I had this funny feeling
Like I just knew it was something bad
I just couldn't leave it alone, picking at that scab
Was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through

Now I am somewhere I am not supposed to be, and I can see things I knew I really Shouldn't see
And now I know why (yea now I know why)
Things aren't as pretty
On the inside

And I'm just pasting the part of the lyric that I thought was pretty good, especially about the fist. From "Getting Smaller":

I can hardly see through the cracks (when i press up on the wall)
I'm not looking to stand up real high (I'd be happy to crawl)
I think I'm losing my grip (but i can still make a fist)
You know I've still got my one good arm and i can beat-i can beat myself up with it!

Can't wait to have the actual cd and listen to it on a better sound system. Have two more hrs to go.

Yesterday on Howard Stern, when he was coming back from break, Fred was playing a clip of Audioslave's new song which then got Robin to ask Howard if he was looking forward to the new NIN (since Robin is a fan *lol*). Howard was like "not really. I guess to me since they've been out of sight for so long, it doesn't bother me." And heard that Trent was a bit skeptical about it as well.

My thoughts on the matter::

If you are a true fan of a band or their music, whatever, you wouldn't care how long it took for a new release, just as long as they put something out. And of course making it worth the wait on having something GOOD come out of it.

If you look here http://www.nin.com/tour/, you tell me that the fans have forgotten or don't care. I can also foresee the bigger venues selling out too in the fall once they start doing the big gigs.

Bubba was telling me that Trent almost didn't make this album and how he was just going to give everything up and not bother with the music industry at all. He heard some of it from the mtv news break clip on the radio. So I went to check it out online but couldn't find what all was said. Though I did come across another article and Trent's idea behind Hand that feeds: "I was so irritated and fed up with the political situation in this country that it slipped into the lyrics and I couldn't stop it from happening," Nails mastermind Trent Reznor said of the tune, which includes the lyrics "What if this whole crusade's/ A charade/ And behind it all there's a price to be paid/ For the blood/ On which we dine/ Justified in the name of the holy and the divine."

I'm so STOKED that the next vid/release will be "Only". Sounds like the setup for the vid is going to be fucking awesome (and it better be too!). You can read that Here.

NIN Goodies

For those wanting icons, these two places have some really awesome shit::

Icon ref #1

Icon ref #2

For more NIN icons [livejournal.com profile] nineinchicons at least thats what I found so far last night.

Also I reccommend the dvd "All That Could Have Been" from The Fragile tour. It's a 2 disc set and its just a kickass dvd. I've been to the actual show and to see that setup live is mind blowing but still pretty cool on tv too.

Anyone on my flist who happens to get the album today or sometime soon, love to hear what you think of it.

I think I did my good deed of the day *tips pimp hat*

Beck tips the pimp hat! I had a funny visual!
Nicely done; I've been hearing mixed reviews on Trent's new work, but I want to hear for myself.
As for the edge fading, I suppose everyone must mature and move on, even though in the days of angst it made for better "art" ^_~! I read in the newspaper that when Trent was about to sing "Hurt" on this tour, he said that it's not even his song anymore. He doesn't feel it as much.
I wish they'd come to Western Canada again!!

*laughs* I bet you did.

Hearing the cd over and over, I'm just so impressed, Trent never disappoints. The only song I really didn't get a feel for was "The Collector", it was alright but nothing that pulled me in.

Thats so true. You can only angst for so long before it gets old to some ppl/fans or hell, even the performer himself.

Trent was about to sing "Hurt" on this tour, he said that it's not even his song anymore. He doesn't feel it as much.

Thats kinda shocking to hear him say that but I can understand his feelings on it. I bet he wouldn't be able to really put that "GRAHH!"ness in it like before though I'm sure he could if he had to. He's probably thinking "I'm trying to better myself, not pull myself back into that dark past."

I bought the recent Spin mag that has him on the cover. I just started to read it so I'm anxious to see what all he had to say about himself and his life as of late.

They might hit your area once they start their bigger tour, I can only hope for you that it happens.

OH GOD! I have an art pic to post in the morning that someone drew of Peter from the Playgirl cover, its so fucking hot.

So while on the subject of TON, I was going through this cd I made that I had of some rare songs I downloaded. There is a song or a cover song called "Angel". But I don't know who originally sang it. I like the song and I like what the lyrics might be saying but I can't find the lyrics since I don't know who sang it before. I can upload the song if you aren't sure what I'm talking about. I also have one called "Go to sleep" that Peter is singing with the chick from Babes in Toyland if you want that too.

I'll get back to NIN when I have a moment (deviating from work right now!)

As for TON, 'Angel' is by Astral Sleep. I kind of knew it wasn't them because it really doesn't contain much of their style except for generally deep vocals ( however, it IS a really nice song).

I got annoyed when I downloaded all these songs Possession, Smells Like Teen Spirit (just some random Gothy person, not TON-esque at all), Hit Me Baby One More Time (sounds like a Britney Spears tape in a dying Walkman), all credited to TON, and they were BLATANTLY NOT TON! What is wrong with people! lol.

I bought that silly Witchblade soundtrack about 5 years ago because of the Pete vox and because I read Witchblade comics and found Ian Nottingham to be the damned finest assassin I've ever seen! ( You can empathize with cartoon/comic crushes, I'm sure ^_~)

I'll be back....moohahahaha

Holy shit! You just wouldn't believe how my jaw just dropped by reading your comment. There were some songs you could tell it wasn't them but some were so close, I could've swore it was them.

So Possession isn't them? Is that not Peter talking in the beginning? Or if it is, did this person just take that clip and put it in the beginning so ppl would think it was TON?

The SLTS was bad, its a song I can not see TON doing very well or even at all. Hit Me Baby had me in stitches, I was like "who the hell put the tape on in slow mode." that was just god awful and to even put their name on it is almost disrepecting the band all together. Joke or no joke, that is another song I can not see TON even touching unless they would butcher it by using their own lyrics.

The only good thing that I downloaded at the time was getting a hold of the banned version of Summer Girl.

TON site

[identity profile] elegant-torture.livejournal.com 2005-05-07 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Beck, have you gone to their official website lately? I have their banner on my user info and it's all newly designed so I checked out the site...it's pink! With unicorns, teddy bears and fairies!?!?! Is this a joke by them or a hack? Yow. It's effin' bizarre!

I haven't heard Possession in a while, but I'll listen again. I know from what I heard that my impression was that it was close, but not them. If you've heard Eric Molarin of Beseech, he can sound -almost- identical to PS at times. Lots of imitators out there. Probably had to practice for ages!

The banned Summer Girl is cute! Other than that I have a bunch of live stuff, covering the Beatles and such.

Thank you for the links. I'm now happily listening (with headphones on at work).

[identity profile] yankeerose69.livejournal.com 2005-05-06 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
No prob! Gotta spread the love. How did you like it so far?

[identity profile] babaca.livejournal.com 2005-05-06 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not bad. A little more mellower in places... I guess when I go to Best Buy this weekend to buy Saiyuki Reload 2 on dvd, I will pick up this cd. :)
