[FIC] Bleach - Wide Awake in Dreamland (Renji/Rukia)

My very first Bleach fic I have in completion and posted. *dances* Took a break on writing belated smut and came up with this little diddy. I'm pretty sure the dream topic came about from the whacked dreams I've been having 2 weeks straight.

Title: Wide Awake in Dreamland

Pairing/characters used: Renji/Rukia
Notes: Takes place after the SS arc. No spoilers. Inspiration also comes from eps. 55 & 61. Many thanx to the roomate *squishes* and dedicated to the renji_rukia peeps cause you guys rock so hard!
Warning(s): The ending got kinda sappy so it may rot your teeth just from reading. *laughs*

Rukia didn’t have to open her eyes to know that the sunrise was just along the horizon. She could feel the heat of the light through her closed lids but it wasn’t so much of the brightness that kept her from opening her eyes.

Slow, steady puffs of air blew through the back of her hair and down her neck, sending a tickling sensation through her body. The emitted heat ensured her that he, indeed, was still there; undoubtedly in a deep sleep. Between the states of sleep and consciousness, she wasn’t quite sure if she was dreaming or not.

“Mmmrr. . . what?” The question came out more of a half slumbered mumble but it startled her none the less. “What did you say Rukia?”

Did I just say that out loud? The shock that she might have actually spoken her thought made her eyes open, though slightly squinting at the light creeping through the window.

“Am I dreaming?”

The body next to her shifted a bit and felt his presence against her back though, not near touching. “Dreaming about what?”

“About this; about you, about me being here.” She was almost afraid to move so she kept as still as possible, not even turning around to face him directly.

Some more sleepy mutterings came as a retort but soon cleared itself so she could understand what he was saying. “I don’t know. If you’re dreaming, then I'm dreaming too.”

He could feel her body tense up and knew that his answer wouldn’t satisfy her. “Go back to sleep Rukia, you’ll find out when you wake up.”

She didn’t respond to that right away, it was as if she was grasping for words that wouldn’t make her feel weak for saying such things. “I'm. . . I’m afraid to go back to sleep. I'm afraid that this really is all just a dream and you won’t be here,” she finally admitted—to him but maybe more to herself.

An arm crossed over to the front of her body, wrapping around her waist and pulling her against the solid wall of his chest. His wandering hand then found hers as he interlaced their fingers together, bringing them to her chest, hugging her securely to him. He curled his body around her as if forming a human shield and felt her relax at his touch.

“It’s going to take more than waking from a dream for me to let you go,” he whispered into the back of her hair.

Letting her held breath escape from her lips, Rukia settled into him, feeling the grip close in more around her. He was not one to say things out of no where and when he said it, he meant it. Even if she did wake up to find him gone from her, she knew that he was now hers as much as she was his. It was an empowering sensation to know that from this moment on, she would be his girl and even more so to know that he wanted it that way.

“Then let me wake from a thousand dreams Renji, just so I can wake in your arms,” she breathed and trickled back into a surrendered state of comfort.

*sniff* Damn, that was really so fluffy! Makes me really believe it will happen (I'm not a Bleach shipper of any couple, but I don't like some pairings...and I acknowledge some pairings, like Rukia with Renji rather than Ichigo, so the story you wrote really made me feel that Renji and Rukia will end up together), but since it is a shounen manga, the romance is left in the air...somewhat.

Anywa, great job!!! I wouldn't mind reading more of this pairing, especially of this kind.

That was so beautiful and sweet <3 the dialogues and the descriptions are fantastic!

One of the many reasons why I think I enjoy writing this pair is that they click so well when it comes to how they behave or what they would say to each other. There is a part I'm working on in my very looong ass very belated Vday smut fic that fits those two perfectly. The dialog exchange is so them.

Your Renji is so Renji-ish it makes me smile *renji!love*

*beams brightly* The weird thing with me is that, I noticed I can channel the male characters a bit better than what I can with females. But since Renji is such a wild, brash character, he's not that hard to grasp. I'm glad that I was able to make him very Renji-ish. *lol*

I can see him saying that. With all the hell they've been through and thinking about their conversation when he was running with her in his arms, I can see him opening up more and realizing that to what I wrote.

I get a bit paranoid when it comes to writing stuff for a new fandom I join. Cause you know how some ppl claim that "they would never say or do that. They are so OOC" yet who are we to say what is right or wrong when it comes to writing a character or pairing, everyone has their own views on how they would see them handled. I guess I'm feeling like that cause of the smut fic I have in the making with this pair. *shrugs* Oh well, I seen worse posted.

I feel the same way. With Bleach, the only pairing I focus on is Renji/Rukia. There are a few other het pairings on the side that I like from time to time but I don't dwell on them as much.

I'm glad they were portrayed as the characters they are. I get kinda paranoid when I dip my toe in a new fandom cause I'm usually afraid of the outcome but I try my best to make it work. I was also a bit scared on just how sappy it got between them but I think it suited them just right. I think thats why I enjoy writing this pair so much.

Oh god yes! I get so teary eyed when I watch #55 and 61 cause the whole interaction with them, they needed that and I would like to think that after Ichi and the gang went back to their world, that Renji and Rukia were able to clear up some more air between them of all the things left unsaid.

I think certain moments fit for the right characters in order for it to sound right. I'm glad you didn't think it was sappy, I get paranoid about stuff like that.

Awwww, that was so sweet! I really like that this story is told mostly through Rukia's thoughts and actions. Most Renruki fics are from Renji's POV so it's nice to see something different.

I can only imagine how safe Rukia felt in Renji's arms. He is such a sweetheart. He's the kinda guy you want to wake up to every morning.

I find Rukia pretty easy to handle too on writing her.

Yet another character that you find easy to write that gives me trouble! You did a great job with her and Renji. I don't understand how people can just completely disregard the romantic potential for Renji and Rukia. I can understand them not preferring it but still just to throw it right out like it's not even a possibility.

Wow, there's over 300 people in renji_rukia? Yay! It's always nice to see a fandom you love getting more popular. I'm not hating on IchiRuki but it's too much sometimes. *lol*

I find I have an easier time writing from the male POVs as well, but lately I've been speaking with my inner Rukia in hopes of balancing things out. You do a nice job of capturing this side of her.

For some reason, I always had a better time with writing male's than what I do with any of the female's I've written with. It's so weird why that happens but I guess cause sometimes I'm afraid that I'll write the girl's too girly but there's nothing wrong of being a sap. *lol*

I think it's pretty clear that she can't 'not feel love' for him (yey double negatives, harr!). ^_^ Even my husband, who doesn't really ship most couples in stories, thinks it's obvious that these two belong together.

I think this is part of my problem as well. I'm not a girly girl, I never have been ('cept I've embraced my inner fangirl *squee* but that's a bit different, lol!), so I'm overcautious about that sort of thing, I think. I want to write RenRuki from Rukia's PoV but part of me is resisting because I really want to see how it evolves in canon first. How weird is that?

Oh and that icon utterly slays me... *thud* You don't happen to have the link to the full pic, do you? I know saw it a while ago and stupidly didn't save it for my bishie wall above my desk (every fangirl needs one!). Pretty please with a Renji cherry on top? :) Thanks!
