Kitty problems

Might as well post this now while everything is still fresh in my mind and the way things are looking, it's not going to be good.

It all started last Fri. night when we were getting ready for bed. Sam did manage to jump in the bed with us but bubba noticed that something just didn't seem right with Sam. (which is odd cause he was fine all day Friday before I went to work) Come early Sat. morning, bubba saw Sam walking out of his closet and then later, didn't know where he went till we looked under the spare bedroom's bed. Sam doesn't normally hide unless he thinks we want something from him or like most animals hide when something isn't going right for them/in them. We went out for a bit in the morning and when we came back, he finally came out from the bed but was sitting by the door in the room.

So I carried him to the living room and placed him on bubba's lap and he just went nuts; meowing and getting really antsy so we put him on the floor and watched to see what he did. He would try to walk forward but as soon as he took a step, he cried out and started to back up and just sat where he was. His left leg is what seemed to have been bothering him the most cause he wouldn't carry on if you touched the right side.

All weekend we would bring him his food and water wherever he decided to lay and bubba would take him to the litter box to see if he had to go potty. He pooped once on Sat but mostly through the weekend he peed. At least he was eating, drinking, and peeing though by Sunday, you could tell he was constipated cause his belly was kinda hard. And this sucked cause by the time we really noticed that something was bothering him, it was already noon on Sat and the vet closes at noon. Since it didn't seem to be too much of an emergency, we just kept our eye on him till today.

Now what was weird was that apparently Sam could get around but we don't know how since he would move when we weren't near him. It wasn't till I took him to the vet that I saw just how he walked.

At the time since we didn't know if it was his leg or what, we thought that maybe he might have hurt himself while jumping up or off the bed, either pulling a muscle or a slight fracture.

When the vet was checking him over, of course the first two things I knew what he was going to point out and that was the ear problem and bad teeth. IF we were made out of fucking money perhaps we would've looked into getting his teeth taken care of but we don't have $500 to blow. Fuck, it's bad enough that the bill right now will no doubt be over $500 once everything is said and done.

When he checked out his legs and put pressure in the areas he was feeling, it didn't bother Sam so much. But once he had Sam on all 4's and put some pressure on his lower back, that's when it really bothered him. They took him out in the back hallway to see how he walks and the vet asked me if that was how he moved around. This was the first time I saw Sam walk and when he did, he had a slight limp.

Right now the vet diagnosed him of having Inflammatory Disc Disease. Said it could be treatable with steroids and anti-inflammatories but won't know how it will take for at least a day so Sam has to stay the night. They called bubba I guess after they took a blood and pee sample and the pee sample had some blood in it >____< (likely cause of not being able to go to the bathroom as much as he should've). Also said that his liver was a bit big and his kidneys were small. They weren't sure if it was cause of his age or there's something else going on inside.

Keep in mind that Sam is a good bit over 15yrs old so sooner or later he was bound to have something go wrong with him.

Bubba and I have come to terms and accepted the fact that we may just have to put Sam down if he doesn't get better or his overall health doesn't improve. I cried a little on Sat. when I saw how it hurt him to walk forward and then cried a good bit this morning knowing we might not have Sam around anymore. I tell myself that I have accepted that Sam might have to be put down and knowing how old he is kinda helps the acceptance better. BUT I'd rather have him die of old age in his sleep than to have his organs go bad or bone issues to where he's suffering.

I hope and pray that the treatment they give him today helps but I can't help but think negative about the whole situation. We'll know the results by tomorrow.

Thanx!

What are the effects of steroids when it's used to treat a condition? (and I don't mean about athletes either) Cause the way it sounds, if this treatment works, we will probably have to issue steroids to the cat till that area gets better. And I know they gave bubba steroids when he had poison ivy really bad.

[identity profile] toriru4ever.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
regardless of what condition is being treated, steroid have the same warnings for potential side-effect:
including raising blood sugar/ulcers/heartburn/psychosis/growth retardation/cataracts
usually the diabetes/ulcers and bone density loss(osteoporosis),cataracts occur with long course of steroid (months to years)

[identity profile] yankeerose69.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, I guess I should've made myself a little clearer. I know roughly the side effects are but I guess I meant to say, what is the purpose of steroids in those two cases (between the cat and bubba's past problem. With the cat, it has to do with the spinal discs in his lower back)

[identity profile] toriru4ever.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
your hubby had poison ivy contact dermititis which probably was bad enough that topical steroids would not have done much good so the doctor ordered steroid pills(potent anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine effect)

steroids can also be used in case of spinal cord swelling/disc swelling to decrease the swelling/inflammation.

When I sit and think about how quick this problem has hit him, it just blows my mind. Cause regardless of his age, he would be the kind that would run down the hallway and do all kinds of silly stuff. Now I don't think he'll be able to do that anymore.

Thanx chickie, I can only hope this treatment works too *hugshugs*.

ii'm sorry for your kitty problems... i hope he gets better with the medicine they give him.. good luck! hugs!

[identity profile] yankeerose69.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
i hope he gets better with the medicine they give him.

I do too. But I feel it's only going to be a temp relief. If he really does have inflam. disc disease, it sounds like something what arthritis does, it never really goes away no matter what kind of drugs you have to constantly take. But I do hope that this does help him.

Thanx chickie, we're going to need all the luck we can get. *hugs*

I pray, in the name of Jesus, that Sam will be healed enough to live out his days in a peaceful manner and will pass on in his sleep- painless and in comfort by Mommy and Daddy- when the time comes. Amen

It's hard to let go, hard to say goodbye but know that when time comes, it will be as it will be and he'll be in a better place.

I will continue praying for him and you guys so that it's easier to handle, though seriously it's always hard to let go of your pet.

*HUGS*

Thanx chickie, that means alot. I was going to text ya on Sunday about saying a prayer for him but got caught up in other things.

It's weird how this affects me more than when our house cat back home died and we had her for about as long as we have Sam.

I'll keep praying for him too regardless if he heals or not.

It means a lot to me that you'd even think to ASK me to say a prayer for him!! *SQUEE*.....

I will continue to do so and will be there for you when you need me.

*HUGGLES*

WUF YOU!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet kitty. I've been through some animal drama myself lately and though my dog is much better I know the dread that happens when you have a sick animal and have to got o the vet. Luck for my about $3000 later my dog is fine. Good luck!

[identity profile] yankeerose69.livejournal.com 2007-09-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fucking crazy how much it adds up in costs on a few things they do to your pet. The most expensive on the bill were the two x-rays. The 2nd time I took Sam to the vet two yrs ago, I saw a pamphlet about pet insurance and I think that's a great idea. At first hubby scoffed at it but after this recent visit, he wishes we would've looked into getting it.

I don't think Sam will ever be the same like he used to be and that really fucking sucks. He was an active cat when he got in those silly moods and now he's just moping around the house when he isn't sleeping half the day away.

[identity profile] chyldofanubis.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It is insane and next animal I get I will look into insuance cuz Vet bills are killer but I love my babies so If I can pay for it or find a way to pay for it I will. I'm sorry about Sam, it's hard to watch a pet become different from how they use to be.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that Sam isn't feeling well. I hope that the treatment will help him. *hugs you and Sam*

[identity profile] yankeerose69.livejournal.com 2007-09-14 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanx chickie! *hugs* I hope this works for him too but I don't think the poor guy will ever be the same kitty like he used to be. He's not as buggy as he used to be and seems to be sleeping more than he used to.
