My only friend, the end
Sad to see this series come to end but sadly tis true.
First off, here are some screencaps to Twilight of Destruction. As always, there ARE spoilers. I didn't bother to cap all the shooting out scenes so to some, the order of pics might not make sense.
Secondly, just a few of my thoughts on the ending and some spoilers regarding Trigun too so if you haven't seen Trigun, and don't want to know what goes on, don't go any farther.
Geez where to start. The directors and writers to the series done a superb job overall. I just wonder what Nightow's thoughts were on how they ended the series considering, that yes, there is more Gungrave, just that we won't see it in anime form again. It would've been nice to have seen Gungrave OD animated but its not likely too, thats for sure.
Just amazing how they could create such a story with what little was given in the game, now THAT'S talent on making something up from scratch. The last eps, the way they would switch back and forth to the present forms of Harry and Brandon, to their younger forms, and then showing the ghosts of all that they killed in the background was just WOW! When you think about it, they could've given this series a really fucked up, dumb as hell ending which I am so glad that they didn't. I guess in some ways they cherished this series to give it the end that they did. The emotions near the end with Harry and Brandon talking things out, I don't think you could get a deeper friendship than what this series portrayed.
anime_dorkus couldn't have said it better than this. " It shows how beautiful and cruel a friendship can be." It also showed to me that Brandon has always been the strongest out of this friendship. Harry was the weaker one but then again, Harry was blinded by greed, hell, I'm surprised that he even found time to truly fall in love with Sherry.
It's hard not to have tears in ones eyes when you get near the very end. With Harry crying out to Brandon that he was sorry, the emotion that was in his voice and the way he cried, god, it gives me chills and makes me want to cry just thinking about it. After all this time, NOW he says he's sorry!!!?? ARRRGH!! Brandon's moments in the caps when you see him standing up and screaming, that is a tear jerker too along with him having tears in his eyes. Sorry, but friend or no friend, I would've killed Harry when I had the chance instead of pussyfooting around.
I thought it was pretty neat on how the very very end, they showed them back in their chibi days when they first met. Course that too was sad considering the kind of life they lived with abuse. I just wonder what became of both of their parents that they were in the orphanage. Last but not least, my heart goes out to poor Mika, being on her own now with no one left that she had loved. Hence why one of the reasons I prefer the game ending. *nodsnodsnods*
EDIT I can't believe I forgot this cause this part has been on my mind too. Did anyone notice how at the end, Brandon used the gun that Harry used to kill Brandon the first time and vise versa? I did happen to make a screencap of it when they are pointing the guns at one another. Thought it was fitting on how they put that in there.
So here is what I've been thinking between Trigun anime & manga and Gungrave anime & game. Both series created by the same guy, Yasuhiro Nightow, though not sure on who was in charge of the Trigun anime. Aside from that here are some things to think on::
Trigun anime:: Wolfwood was killed
Trigun manga:: Wolfwood is alive and kickin, still. (not sure if they plan to kill him off or not since I do take it that Trigun Maximum is still going on?).
Gungrave anime:: Sherry and Grave were killed off
Gungrave game:: Grave kills Harry, Grave and Mika pack up their things where Dr.T and them stayed, and drove off in the "Grave-mobile" into the sunset to continue on to Gungrave OD. Now Sherry had no part in the game but she does show up in GGOD to extract revenge on Grave.
I just find it comical on how both anime series had some similarities going on that never took place in the original creation.
Sure I feel as if this series could've been a bit longer, kinda fill in the gaps of certain events that happened that were never covered but I guess thats what our imagination is for. *sighs*
For the fandom, I look at it this way, we are lucky to have TWO things to fall back on. We have the game ending and we have the anime ending. Whichever one chooses, there is never a wrong or right way. Hell, you could probably even blend the two together, how I'm not sure. I just wish there was more of a translated story of what Gungrave OD is about, that way it would make a bit sense as to what went on 3 yrs later after the fall of Harry and his corruption.
To end this, those that have watched this series and fell in love with it like I have, PLEASE, PLEASE support it by buying the dvds when they come out in July. I can't stress that enough. Hell, even if you haven't seen it and would like to give it a try, do so. You'll either love it or hate it and I also can't stress (or repeat) this enough either, WATCH MORE THAN JUST THE 1st EPS!!!!! I seen so many horrible reviews about Gungrave when it first came out and these morons were going by what the 1st eps was about. HELLO GENIUS!!!! a story has to start somewhere DUH!! If you want to look at it this way, the series really starts at #2 at the very beginning of it all and it works its way up to the present day.
Now I can't wait to re-watch the series all over again, I'm sure I'll be picking up more than what I did before.
