Course I had to remind bubba Sat night about the event for Sunday. Had to remind him AGAIN come Sunday morning. Then he tries to pull off some excuses "I got so much work to do today, we can't spend all day there!" (I knew that was gonna happen).
So we leave the house going on 10am, when we got to the 30 split (east or west) traffic was soooooooooooooo backed up we were nearly at a stand still. We at first thought it was construction since they are doing ALOT of roadwork on 30 West (both ways actually). As we start to get down to one lane, we saw the cause of the traffic. To our right was a tractor trailer that drove into a corner of a limo service building. Seems like the truck was going east bound, ran through the metal divider, crossed the west bound lane, down the embankment, crossed the service road and then the building. We watched the news later on Sunday night but they didn't have much info as to how it happened.
'Twas a good thing for the hold up cause the one event I wanted to see didn't start till 12:30 and bubba made it sound like we were going to rush through everything so we could get home at a certain time. So we get there around 11 and the other good thing about going early is not many ppl are there yet cause some are still in church and some probably already went on Sat. When you walk into the convention hall, its like "which side should we start at first." And I'm like a kid in a candy store, "Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............lookie lookie!!!" *makes grabby hands before hubby slaps them*
The thing I like about artists (at least some of them will do this), they will greet you and tell you a bit about the stuff that they done, the first vendor we went to did that.
Overall, the art everywhere........................X______X so ded!!!!!!!! I was so envious of the majority of the paintings that I wanted to just crawl under a rock. The prices................X_______X <-- very ded, usually ranged from $400-$5,000. *cries* Even some of the clothing there that of course was leather or just decorated very Native American ran from $200 on up. (crafts also varied ALOT in prices too, very rare if you found anything under $10-20)
This one artist who's paintings ran around $1,000 on up did BEAUTIFUL work. Most of his dealt with the Iroquois (Mohawk, etc) style of Indians plus the backgrounds usually were also styled from the 1700's. You could walk in their area to get a better look at the paintings and you can't help but want to touch it cause it looks so damn real, its hard to believe someone painted it. Bubba whispered to me how someone just laid down a few thousand $'s for one of the works. I would too if I had a credit card that I could pay off quick. I didn't grab their business card but I did put my name down on their mailing list.
Some paintings had bubba rolling his eyes considering the price and what the painting looked like. He or I could've done the same scribbly splash paint to make it look like something and charge about a $1,000 or so for it (which I probably wouldn't even pay that much for it).
One thing that never really captured my attention is the jewlry, at least with the turquoise and southwestern stuff. There was a good bit of that there but didn't really look at it. Funny how the only ones in my family who are/were into that stuff was my grandma and my older sis.
The replica of the tipi setup inside was really neat except the tipi was cloth and not traditional hide. We forgot the camera so no pics :(
There was another vendor that had these etched glass sculptures and coffee tables. The tables were very very pretty. They had this one that had a small water fountain in it and the base of the table was from this petrified wood that came from the CO mountain area, that from the sound of the chick, the wood was VERY heavy to haul down. They called that table piece the "Cadillac". I think the reason they called it that, was the price was oh....nearly half of what you WOULD pay for a Cadillac. She wanted........hold on to your seat............$10,000. I even told her "no wonder you call it the cadillac piece." She said if we were interested in it, she would negotiate a bit on the price. YEAH RIGHT!! As pretty as it was, there is NO FUCKING WAY I would pay that much for a coffee table, I don't care what its made out of, your pretty much paying for that wood she used on the bottom, not so much for the glass tops. I wished they had a website but they don't. (UNLESS we were millionaires and had alot of money to just blow, then I would think about getting something like that and a bigger living room *lol*)
The one vendor told us that Sat. was sooooooooooo packed, you could barely move. Thank god we didn't go that day. When we left to go home, more ppl were starting to arrive, more than likely the church ppl considering the way some were dressed.
We saw a bit of the birds of prey section where this guy had an eagle, owl, hawk, and another bird that I just can't think what it was. Seeing an eagle that close up, WOW! Talk about a big bird and its beak!
We then got something to eat while waiting for the 12:30 show of the Indian Dance and Music. Arvel Bird was doing his set before the other act came on, pretty good fidel player. We then moved to closer seats before the other show started and the dance area was a tad small, they could've moved some seats farther back. Tom Mauchahty-Ware who was the main announcer, storyteller, flute player, and singer was a hoot! And a dirty minded old man too *lol* Some of the stuff he said, bubba was like "I can't believe he said that in a place that had little kids." It wasn't all that bad now and if a little kid asked their parent "what did he mean by that?" the parent could make some shit up that would make it sound good w/out really telling them. I'm not much of a fan of the flute music but the flute that he was playing sounded very pretty, not sure if it was the echo effect it had or what. The dancers were awesome as always and the one guy later on did the hoop dance. Those hoops have to be pretty flexible for the way he could fit his body in that circle and then doing all the different moves he made were neat. After that half hr show was done, bubba went back to talk to a certain vendor while I finished checking out the tables I wanted to buy stuff from.
Since some of the stuff I did like were way too expensive, I was hoping to get a book and/or a cd that caught my eye. So the things I did buy were a
- pow wow cd (contains the drummers and singers or chanting, whatever you want to call it)
- A book called Ehanamani “Walks Among” "The story of a Sun Dance Chief" by Dr. A.C. Ross. He was even there to autograph the books they were selling. I couldn't make up my mind which book I wanted to get at his table so I got what I did and the next on the list is Crazy Horse, though I do get a bit choked up and mouth agape when I read up on anything regarding the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Here is Ross's main page.
I have a love for history, I think thats why I like the stuff that I do.
- and a t-shirt which I will provide the pic and link to.
Regarding the links, it pertains to Micki Free and an affiliate site that has his goods to buy.
Micki Free. I had to laugh when I saw what band he played in back in the 80's. Anyone on my flist ever heard of the group Shalamar? *lol* He's done alot of stuff listed in his bio O___O.
Places on the site I recommend to look at are:
Intertribal Indian Market The little kid on stage in some of the pics is his kid, too cute. If you look close enough, they have their own little feather piece on their back (I think its called a bustle, can't remember right now) and their feather fan just like its dad. The thing I admire about Micki's outfit is that he keeps it close to traditional, meaning no pants beneath his leggings as you can see some skin on the side ^_~ here and here. Hell, even the traditional dancers don't go "traditional", they usually have pants beneath their leggings, though you can't blame them, I wouldn't want to be flashing ppl if my outfit were to fly up. I would like to see that area in AZ where the event was held, it looks so pretty/scenic.
Cherokee Free is the site where you can buy Micki's cds and apparel.
This is the shirt I bought. Most of the shirts on the site, they had at the event. It was so hard to choose which one I wanted cause I also liked the War Cry shirt (the one that looks like he's yelling).
Scroll down till you get to the True Native Images and click on the pics. Some of them actually make cool wallpapers.
Here is the section where you can buy the shirts.
Whew! I wrote alot, hope I didn't put anyone to sleep. *laughs*

*yawn stretch*........ Huh? O.O!! Oh.....
Sounds like you had LOTS OF FUN!!! YAAAY!
Don't you just hate when your hubby says "oh, but this....." and starts whining? I hated when mine did that! He promised to take me somewhere and then was all "But this and but that...."
*glares*.... "Shut up, you're taking me!"
*laughs*
Good for you! Glad you enjoyed it!!!

Yeah it was pretty neat though I have a bit more fun at pow wow's.

Must be the genetic male gene.
I'm just glad we were able to go regardless if we had much money to spend or not. Its funny cause where it was at, to get back on the main highway when we were going home, I was like "I remember this area, its not far from where Anna use to live." :p

I'm glad that we were able to stay as long as we had, I thank ALL the vendors for that cause that place was FILLED full with vendor booths so that meant that we had to take our time at looking at things (at least I did).

*laughs* My thing is, I feel that I write too much and can't shut up, though I'm afraid that if I don't write everything out, I'd be missing something. I try my best ^_~ (as you can tell)

I'm glad you were able to do a lot of things despite your husband trying to rush you!
I'm just glad there was enough there to distract hubby and making use of our time instead of rushing through it all like he wanted. Which in some cases he did while I was browsing certain stands, I'd turn around and he's already half way down the aisle till I yell at him. At first when we were stuck in traffic, he's like "You should've just went by yourself." Well where is the fun in that? He went to AKon '00 with me for a day (was both our first times at a anime con) and never again. He was such a downer, almost made me dread that he was there with me but at least he went home later that day.
